First off, an explaination for those who don't know what the hell I'm talking about; altruism is the act of doing good for goodness sake.
In my English class, we've had a few brushes with this word, in a few articles, and apparently someone wrote an excellent essay about the matter. Both have fairly pestimestic attitudes about it. Both claim that we've essentially given up on the idea of good, replacing it with individualistic ideals that come with capitialism. But have we truely lost it?
Last year, the American people gave nearly 200 billion dollars to charity. I got no statistics for Canada, but I don't give a damn. Americans are supposed to be the biggest capitalists in the world right? Anyways, divided amongst 300 million people, its roughly 667 dollars per person. Not bad at all. This means that most people are giving a sizeable chunk of there income on top of taxes to the needy. There is still obviously some good out there. ^^
Money isn't the only way to spread good around the world (in fact many would argue its the worst way to do it. Giving time is the best way of course. Volunteering was something I was completely disgusted to have to do when I first heard it was mandatory to graduate, but it ended up being very rewarding. I wouldn't have known Grace nearly as well as I do now if we didn't spend all that time togeather tutoring. I would never have wanted to become a teacher either, if I didn't know what pressure school can cause on students who don't understand the system. Volunteering is a great thing, and I completely understand/support it now.
But you don't always have to volunteer either. Your time can be given in a way that just isn't done anymore; being the rant absorbing machine. I swear there is not enough people in the world willing to hear out a good rant anymore. People are scared to say anything anymore lest they be called unreasonable, stupid or some other not nice word. If people can't express there frustrations anymore, how can we be expected to keep a level head? Be nice people! Be a rant absorbing machine! ^^
That brings me to my last point; being picky about those you help. This is the number 1 reason why altruism is dead. People want to help the people that are convient to help. Don't be a jackass; help the ones that need you. If someone comes to you for help, help them, even its a small thing, like suggesting someone who you know can help, offering to listen for a short time, or even just a hug or baked goods (I'm serious, Brownies will make anyones day better). I don't care if you HATE the person. Jesus once said "If you love those who already love you back, what reward is there? Even theives think in this way!" Spreading kindness to those who you hate will make you a better person. And who doesn't want to be a better person? ^^
Anyways, thats my rant. I hope you guys like it. I realize its long, and I sound like I'm preaching. But this is the way I feel about goodness in the world. Selflessness a dieing breed, and if we let ourselves let it go completely, what will be able to do to get it back?
